Four Dynamic DEAEF Youth Programs Thrive in New Orleans
New Orleans has been buzzing with activity as the DEA Educational Foundation proudly ran four impactful youth programs in partnership with DEA New Orleans Operation Engage. Through Dance, Martial Arts, Fishing, and BabyScientist, the DEAEF is reaching hundreds of students with positive mentorship, engaging enrichment, and powerful drug-free messaging that reinforces healthy choices and lifelong success.
DEAEF Youth Fishing Program
The DEAEF Youth Fishing Program launched in 2021 along the banks of the Anacostia River at Kingman and Heritage Islands in Washington, D.C. and has been a continued success ever since. On Feb. 9-10, 2026, DEAEF partnered with Louisiana Outdoor Outreach Program (LOOP NOLA) to host two full-day outdoor experiences at LOOP’s City Park location for students from Harry S. Truman Elementary School.
Twenty-four fifth graders and twenty-nine seventh and eighth graders participated in fishing instruction, nature-based games, environmental exploration, and team-building challenges designed to strengthen creative problem solving and confidence. Each student received a fishing rod, fishing hat, boxed lunch, and a Certificate of Appreciation.
DEA Special Agent in Charge Steve L. Hofer, Community Outreach Specialist Dr. Leslie Faulkner, Special Agents, Diversion Investigators, and DEAEF Special Events Consultant Amy Danos mentored and encouraged students throughout the event, reinforcing the importance of living healthy and drug-free lives.
DEAEF Martial Arts Program
The DEAEF Martial Arts Program was conducted by Master Horne of XSDOJO at William Hart Elementary School and Isaac G. Joseph Elementary School. The program ran for fifteen sessions at each school from late August 2025 through Oct. 20, 2025, serving fifty-five fifth graders at William Hart and fifty fifth graders at Isaac G. Joseph.
The initiative concluded with final presentations attended by more than 100 students. Participants received white belts, certificates, and program t-shirts, and proudly took part in a Red Ribbon pledge ceremony where ribbons and stickers were distributed. Dr. Faulkner attended both events, speaking directly with students about drug and alcohol prevention and further reinforcing the program’s character-building message of discipline, respect, and personal responsibility.
The BabyScientist Program
The BabyScientist Program, led by Dr. McDowell, brought hands-on STEM learning to Isaac G. Joseph Elementary, William Hart Elementary, and Garyville Magnet Math and Science Charter School. Students participated in two 1.5-hour sessions at each location, engaging in immersive science activities designed to spark curiosity and critical thinking.
Prior to the events, Dr. McDowell met virtually with science teachers to prepare them for the experience. Despite weather disruptions that required quick adjustments to the schedule, the team demonstrated flexibility and strong collaboration to ensure every session was completed successfully. Students received lab coats and science kits, and Dr. Faulkner attended each program to deliver drug and alcohol prevention messaging and provide additional support throughout the hands-on activities. Evaluations collected from each school reflected strong engagement and enthusiasm.
The DEA Youth Dance Program
The DEA Youth Dance Program is led by Sophia Rabinovitz through Artivism Dance Theater. Classes began in early October 2025 following kickoff performances in mid-September 2025 and are currently running for twenty sessions, with a possible extension under discussion.
The program serves sixteen second graders at William Hart Elementary and fifteen third graders at Isaac G. Joseph Elementary. Students are preparing for performances scheduled for March and April 2026, where they will showcase the skills and confidence they have developed throughout the program. Each student will receive a t-shirt and certificate prior to the performance, and commemorative photos will be presented as keepsakes. Dr. Faulkner will attend the performances to share drug and alcohol prevention messaging with students and families.
Momentum Continues to Grow
Across these four programs, DEA New Orleans Operation Engage and DEAEF have served more than 200 students in New Orleans this school year alone. Through strong partnerships, committed instructors, and consistent mentorship from DEA Louisiana, students are gaining confidence, life skills, and positive reinforcement that supports healthy, drug-free futures. The momentum in New Orleans continues to grow, and the impact is both measurable and meaningful.
