Thanks to a generous five-year donation from the Geraty Foundation, the DEA Educational Foundation (DEAEF) is celebrating the fifth consecutive year of bringing free baseball instruction, mentorship and positive coaching to young people in Chicago.

The partnership began five years ago when a representative from the Geraty Foundation learned about the Foundation's youth sports program through DEAEF National Youth Baseball Program Director Rick Zeitlin.

Now, five years later, that commitment continues to make a lasting impact.

After launching at other Chicago-area locations, the program has called Smith Park in Chicago's Ukrainian Village home for the past three summers. Returning to the same neighborhood each year has allowed Zeitlin to build meaningful relationships with the children and their families.

"Kids from previous years come running up yelling, 'Coach Rick! Coach Rick!'" Zeitlin said. "That's the best part. They remember you, and you get to watch them grow year after year. That's exactly what we're hoping for. The encouragement and positive coaching they receive stays with them long after the program ends."

This summer, 12 boys and girls, ages 7 to 13, participated in the weeklong program, which spans portions of two weeks. For three hours each day, participants learned baseball fundamentals through skill-building drills before putting their new skills to the test during scrimmages.

In addition to instruction on the field, every participant received DEAEF baseball gear, including T-shirts, baseballs and gloves, ensuring each child had the equipment needed to continue practicing long after camp ended.

The program takes place entirely outdoors, even during Chicago's summer heat. Coaches build in frequent water breaks to keep players safe while making the most of every day on the field.

For many families, the program provides an opportunity they otherwise could not afford.

"The parents are incredibly appreciative," Zeitlin said. "Programs like this can be expensive, and many families simply can't afford them. Being able to provide quality instruction, equipment and encouragement at no cost gives these kids an opportunity to learn, improve and have fun. Coming back year after year is what really makes the difference."

What began as a generous five-year commitment from the Geraty Foundation has grown into a cherished summer tradition. By combining athletics with mentorship, encouragement and consistency, the Chicago baseball program continues to give young people far more than baseball skills. It provides trusted role models, lasting relationships and the confidence that comes from knowing someone believes in them.
