DEAEF Partners with BabyScientist: Nurturing Tomorrow’s Scientists with Dr. Kristy McDowell

Creating volcanic eruptions, mimicking the intricate workings of cells, unraveling the secrets of DNA, and defying the forces of gravity are all in a day’s work for Dr. Kristy McDowell, the visionary behind the nonprofit organization called BabyScientist, Inc.
BabyScientist, Inc. is a partner to the DEAEF through DEA’s Operation Engage program as well as its own national youth programs. The goal of this program is to inspire young minds to explore the wonders of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), showcase the effects of chemicals on cells and underscore the critical importance of a drug-free lifestyle.
Dr. McDowell has been interested in research science since her own childhood, holds a PhD in Microbiology and Immunology and passionately imparts her love for science to today's youth. She believes that with the right encouragement, they can achieve anything. As a Black woman in the field of science, McDowell recognizes the significance of representation. She strives to be a role model, filling a void she once experienced in her own education.
BabyScientist programs offer captivating and educational experiences, typically delivered through one or two-day workshops, both virtually and in-person. Dr. McDowell conducts these workshops, providing each budding scientist with curated science kits. These kits are a treasure trove of scientific discovery, complete with essential gear such as lab coats, goggles, and gloves, in addition to all the materials necessary for four exciting experiments. What's more, each kit generously includes surplus supplies, enabling children to extend their scientific exploration well beyond the workshop and share their newfound knowledge with friends and family.

In one experiment, students embark on a fascinating journey into the world of cell biology. Supplied with play dough and beads, they craft their own model cells, igniting their creativity while engaging in interactive learning to grasp the terminology and functions associated with various cellular components.
Another experiment involves the extraction of DNA from strawberries, a mesmerizing process that employs simple tools to unravel the genetic mysteries of nature. Witnessing the transformation of ordinary fruit into tangible genetic material fosters wonder and curiosity.
The eruption of miniature volcanoes consistently steals the show. Equipped with baking soda and vinegar and other materials, participants create a volcano that generates a chemical reaction, culminating in the dramatic eruption. This hands-on experiment offers an exhilarating lesson in chemistry while sparking the flames of imagination.
Finally, the students undertake an experiment centered on defying gravity. Using a water bottle, a playing card, and a piece of mesh fabric, they master the art of upending water-filled bottles without a single drop spilling out. This experiment not only highlights the principles of physics but also instills a profound sense of achievement as participants conquer the seemingly impossible.

Through the DEAEF and its partnership with DEA’s Operation Engage Programs, BabyScientist, Inc. programs have now reached Washington, DC, Los Angeles, California, Athens, Michigan, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Richmond, Virginia, and New Orleans, Louisiana and continue to be requests across the United States. The demand for these transformative workshops continues to surge across the United States, testament to the lasting impact of Dr. McDowell's unwavering dedication to fostering a love for science and a brighter future for our youth.
