DEAEF National Scholarship Programs/Awards: Empowering Youth Through Dance and Martial Arts

Every year, the DEA Educational Foundation’s National Scholarship Programs/Awards help promising students across the country continue their journey in dance or martial arts: pathways that inspire confidence, discipline, and a healthy, drug-free lifestyle.

With $1,000 allocated annually to each Regional Director and Regional Manager, these scholarships are awarded to students already participating in DEAEF’s year-round classes through trusted community partners including local dance studios and martial arts schools dedicated to the DEAEF’s mission. The scholarships can be distributed to one student or shared among several, depending on regional needs and opportunities.

“Our instructors go out of their way to make these scholarship experiences special. They care about our mission and connect with our students in such a heartfelt way. It’s truly heartwarming.”

Christina Pastras, Regional Director

The selection process is deeply collaborative and thoughtful. Regional leaders work closely with the DEAEF instructors who have been teaching these students throughout the year to identify recipients. Occasionally, feedback is also gathered from site partners and school administrators. Together, they consider not only talent, but also enthusiasm, engagement, and the student’s desire to continue classes over the summer. A formal application and group review process ensures a fair and supportive experience for all involved.

Occasionally, when scholarships are awarded, announcements are made at year-end assemblies based on what feels most appropriate for the group and setting.

Scholarship funds are distributed directly to dance or martial arts partners, covering summer class tuition and sometimes additional needs like gear or shoes.

One such example comes from Manchester, New Hampshire, where two young dancers—Isabella (11) and Aubrey (12)received scholarships for the 2024–25 school year. Regional Director Cristine Dhimos worked with their instructor to coordinate summer classes and support their continued training.

“The DEAEF has taught me to say no to drugs and to choose the right path instead of making myself sick and risking my life for something that is worthless and could ruin everything.”

“The DEAEF Youth Dance Program has changed my life in many positive ways and helped me realize the importance of maintaining a healthy drug-free lifestyle.”

Philadelphia

In Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Christina Pastras partnered with Equilibrium Dance Academy, led by instructor and studio owner Angelica Spillis, to support 7-year-old Amelia. Angelica remembers Amelia’s first day vividly:

“When Amelia arrived for class, she was smiling from ear to ear! I had the joy of helping both her and her mom learn how to put her hair in a ballet bun and fit her for her very first pair of ballet shoes. We also picked out the perfect leotard and tights together. I’m just as excited as Amelia is to start class and to have the opportunity to guide her on this beautiful journey into dance.”

Since its inception, the DEAEF National Scholarship Programs/Awards have been supported through national and private funding. At its heart, the program is about more than financial support—it’s about opening doors, building resilience, and giving young people something joyful and purposeful to look forward to.

Whether it's a child lacing up their first pair of ballet shoes or stepping into the martial arts studio for a summer of growth, these scholarships are helping to shape lives—and futures—one student at a time.
