Dancing into Confidence

Since fall 2019, the DEA Educational Foundation’s Youth Dance Program (DEAEF YDP) has partnered with Ballet Legato to bring the joy of movement to students at Ranger High Tech Academy in North Ridgeville, Ohio. What began as a brand-new program for both the Foundation and the dance company quickly became a beloved fixture in the school community.

Although COVID-19 forced a pause just months after launching, the program’s return was met with enthusiasm. “When we restarted, we were elated because it was so well received that first fall,” recalls Ballet Legato’s Executive Artistic Director, Jennifer Muselin.

Over the years, students in elementary school have had the chance to grow with the program, learning not just steps but also teamwork, discipline, and creativity. “It’s cool to see the students that started with us go through a growth through the years,” says Muselin. “They come up and hug you and now have some knowledge of dance.”

One of the unique aspects of teaching dance at a STEM-focused school is showing students that artistic expression is within their reach. Many arrive unsure whether they can dance, but through the program’s focus on breaking movement into approachable steps, they discover confidence and joy.

Today, the classes are led by Ballet Legato company dancer, Isabella Muselin, a professional dancer who has a gift for connecting with kids. Students respond with excitement and energy, eager to learn from someone who shares their enthusiasm.

Each school year includes two 10-week sessions, one in the fall and one in the spring, culminating in performances where students proudly wear their DEA YDP t-shirts and receive certificates of completion. In partnership with the DEA YDP, Ballet Legato also offers themed summer camps built around fun themes like superheroes or “Wizards and Wicked,” so kids can stay engaged and creative even when school’s out.

Through this long-standing partnership, the DEA Educational Foundation continues to expand access to the arts, offering young people healthy, inspiring alternatives while fostering community connection. Together with Ballet Legato, the DEA Educational Foundation ensures that students in Northeast Ohio not only learn to dance but also build skills that will serve them for life.
